About Marbling

Drop ink onto water, drag a comb through. Create the swirly patterns found inside old hardback books.

Marbling — the ancient art of ink on water

Marbling, known in Turkish as Ebru and in Persian as Abri, is one of the world's oldest decorative art forms, with origins dating back to 15th century Central Asia. The technique involves floating pigments on a water-and-carrageenan surface, manipulating them with combs, styluses, or breath, then carefully transferring the resulting pattern to paper or fabric. Traditional marbled paper was historically used to line the inside covers of books, decorate stationery, and create unique backgrounds for calligraphy. The swirling, organic patterns it produces — impossible to plan exactly, impossible to repeat — made each sheet a one-of-a-kind artwork. European bookbinders adopted the technique in the 17th century, and it became a hallmark of fine binding throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, ebru is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Our digital marbling tool simulates the core experience: drop colors onto a surface, drag through them with a virtual comb or stylus, and watch the pigments respond with the fluid, hypnotic movement of real ink on water. Every piece is unrepeatable — a property shared with the physical technique and one of its greatest charms.
