About Zen Garden
Rake peaceful patterns in digital sand. A meditative drawing experience inspired by Japanese rock gardens.
Zen gardens — raking patterns in sand and stone
The Japanese rock garden, or karesansui, is a refined art form developed by Zen Buddhist monks during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). These minimalist landscapes use carefully arranged rocks, gravel, and sand to represent natural elements — mountains, islands, water, mist — in abstract, symbolic form. The most famous example is Ryoanji in Kyoto, where fifteen stones are arranged in raked white gravel in a walled enclosure. The act of raking the gravel is itself a meditative practice. The repetitive, focused motion of drawing parallel lines or concentric circles around stones is understood as a form of moving meditation — a way of quieting the mind and cultivating attention. Patterns vary from temple to temple and monk to monk: some prefer tight parallel rows, others create flowing curves or complex interlocking spirals. Our digital Zen Garden tool brings this contemplative practice to the browser. Rake patterns in sand, place virtual stones, and lose yourself in the quiet rhythm of the lines. There is no goal, no score, no wrong answer — only the pattern you choose to make and the moment of making it. It is among the most genuinely relaxing drawing experiences we have built.
